Meeting Schedule
It’s time to make your plans to attend the
South’s largest regional building industry trade exposition and
educational event… the Southeast Building Conference (SEBC) and its
co-location partner, GreenTrends, set for July 30-August 2, 2008 at the
Orange County Convention Center in Orlando.
Now in its 30th year, the SEBC
is presented by the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA,
www.fhba.com) while GreenTrends is the
annual trade show and conference of the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC,
www.floridagreenbuilding.org).
Complete information and a registration
form on the conference are available at the show’s official web site at
www.sebcshow.com, including hotel
accommodations available at the Rosen Centre (headquarters), the Rosen
Plaza, and the Peabody.
This year’s theme is "Knowledge Is Power"
and reflects the SEBC/GreenTrends’ commitment to present the very best in
education during a challenging time when everyone in the construction
industry must be at their professional best.
48 Seminars, 17 Intensive Courses
To fulfill that commitment, SEBC/GreenTrends offers 17 intensive courses
leading to valuable professional designations and 48 seminars that cover
the gamut of construction, green building, remodeling, multi-family,
50-plus, marketing, management, design, and merchandising, as well as
specialized training on such subjects as construction law, jobsite safety,
risk management, and customer service. The seminars are included in the
base registration fee. The intensive courses are offered at additional
fees.
Three seminars will be presented on
multifamily topics – including design, state-of-the- industry, and condo
and apartment marketing—and two on the 50-plus market focusing on sales
and design. Other seminar topics include cash flow, fall protection,
contracts, top-grading your staff, professional sales presentations and
succession planning.
Get All 14 CEUs at the SEBC
Importantly, Florida contractors can get all 14 hours of required
continuing education at the SEBC/GreenTrends, including eight general
credit hours and the 1-hour requirements for mitigation, rules and law,
business practices, jobsite safety, workers compensation, and advanced
building code. In fact, for your convenience, the schedule allows
registrants to obtain their total requirement in just two days (Thursday,
July 31 and Friday, August 1). See the "Surefire Path to 14 CEUs for
Florida Contractors" for details of this unique opportunity.
1,000 Exhibits and 2 Free Lunches
Over 1,000 exhibits of industry products and services will be on display
during SEBC/GreenTrends with show hours set for Thursday, July 31 from 12
p.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, August 1 from 9 a.m. to 5p.m.; and Saturday,
August 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. All show visitors can enjoy a free lunch
in the exhibit hall on Thursday and Friday and each day features prize
giveaways.
Don’t Miss the Charlie Daniels Concert
Music and entertainment icon Charlie Daniels and his world renown Charlie
Daniels Band headline a first-ever SEBC/GreenTrends opening-day concert on
Thursday, July 31 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Convention Center’s Chapin
Theatre. Tickets are just $35 per person.
SEBC/GreenTrends is also home to the Aurora
Awards for design excellence (www.theauroras.com),
which will be presented Saturday evening, August 2, and honor builders,
designers and merchandisers from a 12-state southern region.
Success with Hispanics and Economic Update
Special educational programs target two areas vital to the future of our
industry: the economic outlook and the growing influence of Latinos in
both management and labor. Stewart Title Company Chief Economist Dr. Ted
Jones and economist Bradley Hunter of Florida-based MetroStudy will lead
an economic panel presentation on Thursday, July 31 at 3 p.m. Ricardo
Gonzalez of Bilingual America highlights the annual Leaders Advantage
program on the subject of "Success with Hispanics" from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
on Wednesday, July 30. Gonzalez will also cover Hispanic communications
and legal issues during a two-hour seminar on Friday, August 1 from 8 a.m.
to 10 a.m.
Green Building Takes Center Stage
As green building takes center stage in the construction industry, SEBC/GreenTrends
covers the subject in comprehensive detail. In addition to two intensive
courses, including the popular two-day course "Green Building for Building
Professionals," general seminars cover green interior design, green
marketing, green building quality and certification, landscaping for water
efficiency, understanding green products, and green remodeling.
Three Dynamic Seminars for Remodelers
Remodelers can gather a wealth of valuable education at SEBC through
courses that lead to the Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) and Certified
Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) designations as well as two seminars led
by popular Victoria Downing of Remodelers Advantage, Inc. in Laurel,
Maryland. Downing will present "Dare to Compare with Your Remodeling
Peers" on Friday, August 1 at 8 a.m. and moderate "Lessons from the Big
Fish: How Large-Volume Remodelers Found Their Edge" at 1 p.m. on the same
day. "Dare to Compare" focuses on how your financial performance compares
to that of other remodelers and what you can do to improve. "Big Fish"
features three of the nation’s leading remodelers: Ciro Giammona, Harrell
Remodeling Inc., Mountain View, CA; Scott Whitlock, Hubert Whitlock
Builders Inc., Charlotte, NC; and Daniel J. Weidmann, Weidmann &
Associates Inc., Roswell, GA.
Also for remodelers, Michael Strong of
Strong Brothers, Inc., Houston, presents "Ten Steps to Green Remodeling"
on Friday, August 1 at 3:30 p.m. Strong is a former Texas Remodeler of the
Year and a leading remodeling educator. The Remodelors Night Out
networking session is set for Friday evening, August 1 at 7 p.m.
Sales and Marketing Education
Professionals in sales and marketing will also find SEBC to be an
enriching educational experience. In addition to intensive courses that
lead to the designations of Member, Institute of Residential Marketing (MIRM),
Certified Sales Professional (CSP), and Master Certified Sales
Professional (MCSP), sales and marketing pros will benefit from the annual
Sales Rally (this year featuring John Palumbo of Sterling Group,
Jacksonville and Meredith Oliver of Oliver Communications, Orlando) on
Friday, August 1 at 2 p.m., and "Designing and Selling Through
One-of-a-Kind Urgency" featuring architect Quincy Johnson of Boca Raton
and sales pros Bill Webb of Jacksonville and Mike Kephart of Denver, CO.
Design and merchandising seminars feature
an all-star lineup of speakers, including architects Don Evans of The
Evans Group, Orlando; Deryl Patterson of Bloodgood, Buster and Sharp,
Jacksonville; and Brandon Davis of Looney, Risks, Kiss in Memphis, TN; and
merchandisers Marc Thee of Marc Michaels, Winter Park; Rita Williams of
Merchandising Plus, Jacksonville; and Kay Green of Kay Green Design,
Orlando.
Just for Our Associate Members
Associate members will enjoy a wide range of education at the SEBC,
including seminars by Beverly Koehn of San Antonio, Texas, who will
present two, two-hour seminars on Friday, August 1. The first is the
subject of her new book "Loyalty Is Love: How to Hold Clients for Life;"
the second is "Packaging the Right Stuff," a guide to effective sales
proposals and presentations. Another highlighted associate seminar is
presented Saturday, August 2: "How to Get Paid Every Time" by Robert
Kanjian of Building Solutions, West Palm Beach.
Florida HBA members are welcomed to
participate in the Summer Builders Conference, which is held in
conjunction with SEBC and includes committee meetings leading up to the
summer Board of Directors meeting on Sunday, August 3 at 9 a.m. at the
Rosen Centre Hotel.
